Explain your reasons for seeking admission to Montclair State University, including your academic strengths and interests, any situations that may have impacted your academic record, and any significant activities in which you have participated.
I am currently seeking admission to the history program at Montclair State University. As a prospective student, I believe Montclair to be the perfect fit for my educational goals. Earlier this year, I attended an open house at the university; to say I was impressed would be an understatement. At first glance, the campus seemed to be the perfect mix of traditional and unique. Throughout my visit I found myself fascinated with the campus’s mix of old Spanish Mission style and modern conveniences. Aesthetics aside, what really drew me in was the enthusiasm that radiated from the students I encountered. On my tour I had the opportunity to speak with several members of the faculty, and each one definitely made a positive impact on me. One experience that really struck home for me came when the Dean of Students and President of the Student Government Association happened to cross our tour’s path and made a point of coming over and introducing themselves to us. Their spirited introductions made it obvious that they put their hearts into their work. That experience made me feel like Montclair State was a community I wanted to be a part of.Another aspect of Montclair that attracted me was its history program. My interest in history goes far beyond the walls of the classroom. I have always been interested in how, when, and why events took place. As a self-proclaimed history buff, I am always on the lookout for new information. Ever since I can remember, I have visited places such as the Museum of Natural History or the Gettysburg battlefield with my family and friends from Boy Scouts. While my peers may long to catch a home run ball at Yankee Stadium or snag tickets to the Super Bowl, I can usually be found sifting through Web pages about some obscure battle or watching documentaries that seem to make the rest of my family drift off to sleep. I have become accustomed to my girlfriend’s protesting groans, which begin as soon as the words “History Channel” flash across the television screen. I have always had a strong desire to pursue my interest in history, and I have therefore enrolled in as many related courses in high school as possible: World History, Humanities, U.S. History I, U.S. History II, and, to top it off, Advanced Placement U.S. History, which I am currently taking as an elective during my senior year. I believe these courses will help prepare me for my major. In the past year, I have begun to take a more serious approach to my school work. During most of my freshman, sophomore, and junior years in high school, I was far from a star student. I slacked off, procrastinated, and coasted through my classes. Toward the end of my junior year, however, I came to the realization that I was making a huge mistake. Attending college had always been an ambition of mine, so I began to buckle down and put more effort into my work. This year, I have attained better grades than ever before. I intend to keep up my performance throughout the remainder of high school as well as college. As an individual, I am driven to help others. For the past twelve years, the organization that has let me do so has been the Boy Scouts of America. Through my involvement in Boy Scouts, I have had countless opportunities to give back to my community and environment. It has also brought me the good fortune of being able to explore another passion of mine, which is camping. Other activities that I have been involved in include playing guitar and participating in my high school’s student government and art club. I have also volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, working on housing projects for people in low-income areas. I think the wide range of activities I am involved in tells a lot about my character. My interests in community, academic, and personal activities define who I am as an individual. I am someone who is dedicated to pursuing a career based on my passion for history. I am also someone who is passionate about helping others and bettering my community. I would be honored to be accepted into Montclair State University. Given my academic and personal strengths, I believe Montclair to be the perfect university for me to flourish as a student as well as an individual.
